Identifying types of public spaces
The author distinguishes and defines 15 types of public space, such as: quasi-plaza, a place to celebrate, a “tamed” forest, a targeted recreational area, a civic spot, a green space, a wild promenade, a neighbourhood spot and others, based on a study conducted in the years 2016–2018 in 7 towns of the Izabelin commune (the metropolitan area of Warsaw), using a method devised by the author and discussed in the publication.
The presented results of the study have been used to determine the potential of the analyzed space within an interdisciplinary framework, combining issues connected to architecture, landscape, urbanism, life and social sciences, as well as elements of the economics of space. The proposed method will definitely be useful for design purposes, diagnosing existing public space and developing typologies of other kinds of public spaces.
Keywords: suburban areas, recreational places, leisure places, Izabelin commune, space models, types of public spaces.
