The Narration and Performativity. On Leopold Buczkowski’s Late Prose

The book focuses on late works of Leopold Buczkowski, one of the most unusual and controversial Polish writers of the 20th century, often called a “Polish Beckett”. The author analyses in detail Timely Beauty (Uroda na czasie), Bathing in Lucca (Kąpiele w Lucca), The officer at the Vespers (Oficer na nieszporach) and A Stone in the Nappies (Kamień w pieluszkach), published after 1970 Buczkowski’s late works considered the most hermetic and the least commented on.

Buczkowski’s works linked Polish literature to the most important trends in the avant-garde Western novel. The key problem and motif of the book is the crisis of the novel in contemporary prose and performativity.

Keywords: Leopold Buczkowski, performativity, non-narrativity, war, trauma, Holocaust, prose, novel, unfictionality, experiment, the avant-garde, collage.
