The Pimp Pogrom in Warsaw
In late May 1905, a wave of violence, known as the Pimp Pogrom, shook Warsaw. For several days, workers and artisans, mostly of Jewish origin, assaulted members of the local underworld – pimps, thieves, swindlers, and profiteers – and ransacked establishments associated with the criminal circles and/or commercial sex – cafés, inns, brothels, and private apartments. This source volume situates these events in various contexts (of the Revolution of 1905, prostitution, criminality and the underworld, and the labor movement), presenting the reader with a comprehensive picture of the 1905 riots in Warsaw.
With sources translated from the Yiddish by Monika Polit; from the Polish, Hebrew, French, Russian and Yiddish by Aleksandra Jakubczak
Keywords: pogrom, 1905 Revolution, underworld, prostitution, Warsaw Jewry.
