This thematic volume contains mainly articles examining food- and nutrition-related lexis in modern and historical general Polish as well as in local varieties of the Polish language. The papers derive from presentations given at a "Dialogue of Generations" conference.

The authors focus on selected issues associated with regional and dialectal culinary lexis (including names with foreign etymology) from different regions in Poland and abroad, among them: Lesser Poland, especially Podhale, Pogórze, Kielce and Lublin Regions, Greater Poland, the Greater Poland-Little Poland borderland, Krajna, the Chełm and Dobrzyń Land, Warmia and Masuria, and the Northern and Southern Kresy/Borderlands (Grodno/Hrodna and Lwów/Lviv Regions, respectively). A few of the articles deal with names for particular dishes in different Polish dialects, often diversified both formally (e.g. morphologically) and in terms of etymology. Some contributions discuss old culinary lexis (including the lexis of the oldest Polish cookbooks), some examine modern general Polish vocabulary (like names for articles of pastry, or veganised dishes), several document newest lexis (including culinary neologisms collected by the University of Warsaw’s Language Observatory and those used in the blogosphere).

The remaining papers are devoted to historical lexicography, history of the Polish language (on the development of interest in historical documents of Polish-speakers’ verbalised linguistic consciousness), semantics, phrasematics (on chrematonyms derived from winged words) and onomastics (on the etymology and motivation of pre-World War Two official place names in the gmina/commune of Turgiele in the Wilno/Vilnius Region).
The volume opens with a short biography in memoriam of the late Professor Barbara Falińska, an outstanding linguist, Polish philologist and Slavist, social and educational activist, who passed away on 13 March 2022.
