The main theme of the next volume of the annual Światowit is the issue of identifying elites in the widely understood medieval world. The development of societies under the feudal system supported the formation of elites distinguished from the rest of the population by their position, prestige and property status. Representatives of these groups participated in the shaping of ideas, which allowed them to influence the development of society as a whole. The elites’ special status could be determined, among other things, by their origin and cultural background, diet, the assortment of goods used and, more often than not, the place and form of burial.
The articles contained in the volume address issues related to the possibility of identifying – in light of archaeological sources – people of special social standing and the ways in which their status was expressed, taking into account interdisciplinary research perspectives.
The volume is the result of the conference Przeszłość ma przyszłość (The Past Has a Future), organized by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, where various approaches to the titular problem were presented. It opens with a commemorative piece about Professor Jerzy Kruppé, who undoubtedly belonged to the elite of archaeologists.
