Megaprojects in Central America: Dilemmas, Discourses, Debates
This book presents a comprehensive historical and political analysis of the largest and most significant megaprojects in tourism, energy, and mining in the context of the development and modernization process in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. At the same time, it describes the methods of implementation of these infrastructure projects and their socio-environmental impacts. It is characterized by a comprehensive, trans-sectoral and comparative approach that includes political, geostrategic, economic, social, cultural and environmental dimensions.
The interdisciplinary nature of the research perspectives is closely related to the diversity of authors who are members of the research group funded by the National Science Center (https://dissonance.wn.uw.edu.pl/). The presence of geographers, political scientists, sociologists, economists, and those with research experience in international relations, anthropology, and environmental protection allowed for the sharing of experiences and practices around cross-cutting and cross-thematic issues.

This book deals mainly with the consequences and local perspectives of the construction of megaprojects in Central America: the hydroelectric projects Reventazón (Costa Rica) and Barro Blanco (Panama), the tourist parks in the Guanacaste region (Costa Rica) and Bahía de Tela (Honduras), and the gold mines La Libertad and La India (Nicaragua). From the beginning, the monograph criticizes the large infrastructures for their costs and, above all, for their social and environmental consequences, which hit the local population hard. I am convinced that it will be a reference for researchers who want to study in more depth the history and current situation of megaprojects in Central America. It is also equipped with a majority view "from outside" the region, excluding any subjective position and providing a general overview of the subject. It is a book that can serve as a reference for framing the subject, but also as a starting point for future research or further investigation of the issue.
