A selection of texts by a French historian Roger Chartier, concerning the history of books and reading. The author focuses on the changes in literate culture and its contemporary adaptations. The publication also contains Chartier’s thoughts on reading in the time of electronic texts and his comments about the social impact of books.

Roger Chartier (ur. 1945) – jeden z najwybitniejszych francuskich historyków czasów nowożytnych, specjalizujący się w historii książki i historii lektury, profesor l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales, College de France oraz University of Pennsylvania w Filadelfii (USA).

Współredaktor i współautor bardzo ważnych opracowań zbiorowych, m.in.: Histoire de l’édition française (wspólnie z Henri-Jeanem Martinem, t. 1–4, 1982–1986, wyd. 2 popr. 1989–1990), Histoire de la vie privée, t. 3: De la Renaissance aux Lumieres (1986, wyd. pol. 1999), Storia della lettura nel mondo occidentale (wspólnie z Guglielmem Cavallem, 1995). Jego najbardziej znane książki autorskie to: Lectures et lecteurs dans la France d’Ancien Régime (1987), Les Origines culturelles de la Révolution française (1990), Culture écrite et société.
