The coming of the book
The author presents the first three centuries of the history of the printed book, skilfully combining an information-rich mode of writing with a functional approach, considering facts as elements of the economy and the social and cultural life of early modern Europe. The reader gains knowledge about different aspects of the production and distribution of the historical book: the production of paper is discussed, as well as the essence of Gutenberg’s invention, the technique of manual typesetting, casting the type, printing composition, the binding characteristics, illustrations in the printed book, book trade, the milieu of the producers of old prints, and the geography of 15th–18th-century printing.
