Between Conflict and Coexistence. Natal and Zululand in 1824–1856
The book depicts the history of Southern Africa in a transition period, after the arrival of Europeans but before they became a dominant power in the region. It is a history in which Africans are still partners, not victims, and shape local realities not less than the newcomers. At the same time, it is a presentation of the process which led to the rise of the colonial order, albeit not yet in its final form. It shows the transformation of mutual relations but also of the regional balance of power.
Keywords: South Africa, history, KwaZulu-Natal, Zulu, Boer, British.
