Facing Challenges of Identification: Investigating Identities of Buryats and Their Neighbor Peoples – EBOOK

The volume discusses the dynamically changing identities among Buryats and other nations of Eastern Siberia and Inner Asia. The wide range of articles has been organized into three clusters – Ethnicity and Nation-Building Processes, Buddhist Identities, and Landscape and Indigenization. Some of the papers present anthropological empirical research of particular groups, while other adopt a perspective of literary or ecological studies. Constituting an interdisciplinary endeavor, the volume tries thus to link the diverse phenomena under investigation and different research methodologies, and to show them in a wider context of historical and transnational processes. Lastly, it aims at bringing new theoretical perspectives to studies of nations and peoples of broadly understood Inner Asia.

Kamil M. Wielecki – is an anthropologist and social philosopher, PhD in ethnology and cultural anthropology, assistant professor at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw. He has done extensive ethnographic fieldwork research in Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and Russia (Central Siberia and Dagestan). His areas of interest include postsocialist studies, social transformations and economic anthropology. He is the author of Coping with Uncertainty: Petty Traders in Post-Soviet Russia (2015).

Ivan Peshkov – is a Russian-Polish social anthropologist. His research is focused on the politicization of quasi-indigenousness in the Russo-Chinese border areas, frontier biopolitics in Eurasia, the Evenki (in Siberia and China) and memory work in Inner Mongolia and Transbaikalia. He has carried out research on the Chinese-Russian-Mongolian border, investigating the main economic and historical processes that characterize the area.
